The first key

A whole week of hype is coming, and it's probably well-deserved. While I fear that it won't be the most aesthetically-pleasing series, it's full of fun matchups and compelling storylines.

But first to re-cap what the Bulls were able to Miami, the importance of the conquest almost seems diminished because it was so thorough. Were the Heat simply that bad? Perhaps, but damn did the Bulls look good in these 4 games, and most importantly played well offensively even in games where they didn't shoot well. And while the frontcourt proved to be the constant I had hoped for ('battle-tested' was a term Riley aptly used) it was the consistency of Gordon and Deng that led the way.

Deng was phenomenal and perplexed the Heat all series, averaging 26.3 points on 58% shooting.  And it was mostly a typical performance: moving without the ball and getting open looks. He seemed even more confident and aggressive with his mid-range game than usual, but rarely forced anything. Even when he was 'forcing' and demanding the ball in the paint at points, it was to exploit the obvious mismatches he had over Heat defenders. He won't have that same degree of luxury against Tayshaun Prince, but he's playing at such a high level right now (and in the way he plays within the offense) that I don't see him being slowed down that much. Maybe the Bulls can't use him as a top option this series but he'll always be moving and getting open.

But while Deng got the most attention for his raised production this postseason, I've been even more impressed with Ben Gordon. Luol said it after game 3, the Heat were gearing to stop Ben and were trying to trap him at every opportunity. Deng gets shots within the offense, but Gordon is  the offense. People want consistency out of Gordon? look at this:

Min FGM-A 3PM-A FTM-A PTS
Game 4 45 6-16 3-7 9-10 24
Game 3 38 7-16 2-5 11-14 27
Game 2 44 11-19 5-8 0-0 27
Game 1 43 7-19 0-5 10-11 24

Didn't matter how he got the points, Gordon did what the team needs him to do: stay on the floor and keep scoring. The only game where he didn't feast at the line was when he was bombing away 3-pointers. Hopefully sometime soon the label 'streak-shooter' can be shed, because it's just a nice way of saying a player is average. Ben Gordon is special, and he had a fantastic series. While Deng couldn't be single-covered by the Heat, the whole Heat team defense had fits with Gordon. He had some bad turnovers but was overall level-headed when handling the trap, he'd come around screens and force fouls on 'showing' Miami bigs, and he'd put his head down towards the paint-dwelling shotblocker's punishment, which, like much of what the Heat could muster this series, was slow and late.

If the Bulls are going to take Detroit it'll take a lot, but it will start with these two. Sure, saying the team's best players will be needed isn't exactly news (unless you're one to over-value 'the little things'), but what comes after early flashes of brilliance in a career (if it ever does) is consistency, and so far Deng and Gordon have shown it, and as a result the Bulls have as well.

I will say this about Detroit
first time I went up there by myself (1999), was to see a baseball game at Comerica against the Reds (I'm from DC).  I drove up there, 9 hours, without my gf (whose father told me if she went away with me for the weekend would have to find a new place to live because we weren't married), and without my mapquest directions...

I will say that there was a burned out car on just about every exit on i-75 around the major exits for the city of Detroit.  Honest to god... then the day I left, there was a car on the opposite side of me on i-75 that was flipped over (I see this a night after I overhear someone at the Tigers' game telling someone else that people with foreign cars better not mess with anyone with a GM or Ford...  I was driving a Honda)...

Detroit isn't the best, but I'm sure Chicago has their sorry spots too... Cleveland is the wasteland though of all wastelands...

by Boney on May 1, 2007 1:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Cleveland sucks! Indy sucks. Both.....
ugly cities. It was 1996 when  I was in Detroit with my mom and my sister for some kinda Holland fest my Mom made us drive to. I was listening to the Bulls Knicks game on the radio when I saw this Old guy dressed as a woman with smeared lips stick over his face and a blonde wig and he was unshaven. He was driving this huge Yellow boat for a car. It was old and broken down. Then I had to watch people from Holland dance in weird cloths and wooden shoes.

I don't think either Indianapolis or
Cleveland qualifies as a city.

I was in Indy to see the Final Four (Tyrus got in foul trouble and had a poor game, unfortunately) and I found that it was really just a desultory, haphazard collection of buildings in the middle of a vast field.

Cleveland's downtown has the visual texture and feel of hardened manure.

I think it's funnier..
when people dance around in cloths rather than clothes ;)

I know it was a typo, but imagine people dancing around with just loose pieces of cloth on them...  mmmm  Jessica Alba and loose cloths

Wait, you're not originally from Detroit?
How are you a Pistons fan? That always confused me about some fans. Do you just pick a team out of a hat and choose to follow them, or follow them because of their success?

Well, for example...
I was born in St. Joseph, MI, which is on Lake Michigan.  Our local station only played Chicago teams, so that's what I grew up rooting for.  And that is a fortunate coincidence, because the Bulls dynasty started as soon as I was old enough to watch them.

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on May 1, 2007 5:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

For me,
I grew up near Portland and was a Blazers fan, so I HATED Chicago through the dynasty years (blasphemy here, I know - but it was no fun to watch Jordan score on your team).  I'm a Bulls fan now because I was a Kirk fan during his time at KU - and considering the state of the team when he was drafted, no one could ever accuse me a picking a team because of its success!

Pistons' fan and why...
my dad was raised in Northern Ohio, and since he was a fan of the tigers and lions already, he assumed the role of pistons' fan.  I grew up in a house that only watched basketball when the pistons were on (1987-now)...

That's news to me. Hopefully Paxson doesn't forget his name while trying to extend the players that are actually important.

by Paxson Jackson on May 1, 2007 8:51 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Noc
is a restricted free agent at the end of the season.  We will keep him unless some team wants to way overpay for him.  Paxson has said as much.  He's also said openly that he really wants to keep Noc, which a smart manager wouldn't say if he didn't know the feeling was mutual.

It's not about who's more right
The point is resigning the guy isn't a sure thing because of something Paxson said.

by Paxson Jackson on May 1, 2007 12:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He's the inverse barometer of truth.
Last year, he predicted the Bulls would make the Finals. They were ousted in the first round.

This year, he predicted the Heat in six. Bulls sweep.

He spent most of the season concocting inane trade scenarios. No trade. (Thank God Paxson is intelligent.)

If Smith thinks Noce will end up elsewhere, it's a sure sign that he'll be in a Bulls uniform next year.

by joejoeEnglish94bulls4ever on May 1, 2007 1:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I like how
just pointing out a different position on contract extensions draws the "Sam Smith is a liar!" comments. Yeesh. Nocioni resigning isn't a huge priority when you consider Gordon and Deng can and will negotiate big extensions this summer, Tyrus Thomas looks like he can play, and a high draft pick could take Nocioni's grit-stained spot on the bench. Trading the pick and Nocioni might work out too. There are a a lot of things that can be done with the guy. You don't have to like Sam Smith to realize that.

by Paxson Jackson on May 1, 2007 1:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think anyone
called him a "liar."

It's just that he doesn't have a history of being very accurate, either in his game predictions nor in his predictions concerning player movement.

While a statement by Paxson isn't dispositive, an insinuation by Smith is even less so.

Sometimes, I think the tidbits Smith publishes are the rumors he hears at the urinal in the press men's room after the game.

You are right, Noce may end up with a different team. But, on the other hand, Paxson and Skiles do seem to genuinely admire him as a person and, more importantly, a player.

by 1958ChiTown on May 1, 2007 1:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

"He's the inverse barometer of truth."
Yeah, I guess you were indirect about that. Nothing's better than debating everything except what the debate is about, huh?

Sam's trade scenarios aren't predictions (a big "who cares?" on that front too), just suggestions, and fun reading. He does consider salary cap, and team needs. Steve Nash for Jerome James isn't going to be found in his column on Monday, and if it did I'm sure he would have a good reason. I suppose if you think you know what Skiles and Paxson are thinking none of that stuff matters.

Buzzkill.

by Paxson Jackson on May 1, 2007 2:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I am guessing that if Paxson and Skiles
say good things about Nocioni, they probably mean it.

And if Skiles plays Nocioni, I think that is another good indicator that he feels Nocioni has value.

by 1958ChiTown on May 1, 2007 3:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

"money money money money money....
everybody has a price!"

I think this can be put off until the season's over, but I just want to say lets not get soft in the head when it comes to business decisions. "value" means money. I'm sure both Noc and Pax/Skiles have a figure in mind that can be completely messed up by another team's valuing of Noc.

Nice things said about him  doesn't give us much of an indication as to how high they'll go to re-sign him. There's just no way to tell.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 1, 2007 3:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That's all certainly true.
I don't know if any other teams are really going to initiate a bidding war over Nocioni as a restricted free agent, but it could happen.

by 1958ChiTown on May 1, 2007 3:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It doesn't matter
Like Matt said, other teams could offer Nocioni more than the Bulls are willing to spend. Gordon and Deng are the priorities too. It shouldn't take 100 comments to agree on the uncertainty of an uncertain situation.

by Paxson Jackson on May 1, 2007 3:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I was just pointing out that a Sam Smith
article isn't a particularly credible or persuasive source of information on Nocioni's ultimate destination.

No one was disputing the possibility that Nocioni could and might and may end up somewhere else.

In sum, I agree with Craig's initial post (which acknowledges the point Matt made):

"We will keep him unless some team wants to way overpay for him.  Paxson has said as much.  He's also said openly that he really wants to keep Noc, which a smart manager wouldn't say if he didn't know the feeling was mutual."

by 1958ChiTown on May 1, 2007 4:20 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ha!
What else can Paxson even say? That's why I brought up Sam in the first place.

streak-shooter
the label may have a conotation of average, but truth be told gordon is a streak shooter....when hes hot noone is better, when he's cold...eww

That being said, what I'm seeing more from gordon, and especially, quoth Hubie, as he matured in real time during that series, is when his shot wasn't falling, he drove to the pain to get the FT's. So shall they drop the streak shooter title and call him what he is "The 2nd best small scorer ever behind AI" of course; will they...no

by milesgmsu on May 1, 2007 8:34 AM CDT   0 recs

Not sure I agree with the analysis
NAME    FGM    FGA    FG%    3PM    3PA    3P%    FTM    FTA    FT%    2PM    2PA    2P%    PPS*    ADJ.
FG%^
BG        7.4    16.3    .455    1.9    4.6    .413    4.6    5.4    .864    5.5    11.7    .471    1.31    .513
            7.8    17.5    .443    2.5    6.3    .400    7.5    8.8    .857    5.3    11.3    .467    1.46    .514

This is a comparison of BG's regular season versus playoff stats, the playoff numbers are the second line.  The only positive number on there to me is the increased free throws, the other numbers don't show any improvement.   Furthermore, his AST/TO has gone from 1.19 to 1.16, also not an improvement and not very good, and even more worrisome based on the fact that if Hinrich gets in foul trouble, BG handles the ball more.  You could say Gordon was consistent with his regular season numbers, but I don't think his regular season numbers were overwhelmingly great given the fact that he is the primary option.  And I don't think the Heat were that much of a challenge.  Who were the Heat trying to stop BG with, Jason Williams on one knee, or 57 year-old Eddie Jones and GP?  The real question is whether BG can maintain these numbers against a much better opponent in Detroit.

Deng is the guy who stepped up his game in the first round.

by bullshooter on May 1, 2007 8:54 AM CDT   0 recs

The AST/TO went up
because Gordon had to handle the ball more. I'm not sure how much pooh-poohing is allowed when the guy did an okay job playing emergency point in game 1.

by Paxson Jackson on May 1, 2007 9:00 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He played great in game 1
as the emergency PG.  Not so great in games 2-4.  I'm not trying to rip the guy, I'm just saying this is what he needs to do for the Bulls to be a successful team, and what we should expect him to do.

The deviations were Deng up and Hinrich down along with Duhon fortunately picking up some of the slack.

by bullshooter on May 1, 2007 9:04 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

duh
was awesome game 3 and 4....not so much 1 and 2

by milesgmsu on May 1, 2007 9:15 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm wary of playing percentages with Gordon
I was more concerned going into the series that he would have a game where he disappeared, and he didn't.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 1, 2007 9:20 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If that had been the thrust of your diary
I would have whole-heartedly agreed with you.

by bullshooter on May 1, 2007 9:35 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Thanks for the insight
I can find some consolation that he hasn't deviated that much from his regular season stats.
  1. He is consistent
  2. He doesn't go all ball hog when he has a chance to
  3. We don't have any reason to expect a letdown in the next series (although we should fear one)

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on May 1, 2007 11:32 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That line does more for Matt's argument that yours
Miami used all of the tactics that traditionally have given Gordon problems, hard traps and tall defenders, and he at the very least still matched his season averages.  Given that almost all players will fail to play as well as in the playoffs over the course of their careers.  I'll trade a 3/100s increase in A/T rate for the FT attempts.

by Scotter on May 1, 2007 5:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

obligatory comment about length of playoffs
The playoffs are too long, for many well documented reasons.

Okay, glad I got that off my chest.  ; )

by GWKD on May 1, 2007 9:12 AM CDT   0 recs

and that too
I'm specifically referring to, however, the NBA's recent practice of staggering the games too long for T.V. purposes.  And the seven game first round series, I could probably do without, with all due respect to the Mavs.  All this means that we have too much time until the next Bulls game.

by GWKD on May 1, 2007 10:36 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Given the results...
I'd say the regular season is about one game too long.

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on May 1, 2007 11:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sir Charles...
Among my favorite things to come out of the Bulls-Heat series was Luol Deng rewarding John Paxson's faith in him.  Deng's game was just fantastic; consistent and clutch.  In particular, I kept thinking about Barkley blasting the Bulls for opting out of the Pau Gasol trade because Pax didn't want to part with Deng.

With great comtempt in his voice, I believe Barkley said at the time, "Who's Luol Deng?"

Well, Sir Charles, if you don't know by now, maybe you should ask Pat Riley.  Unlike Chuck, he has a pretty good idea.  And a few NBA championships under his belt, also unlike Chuck.

Wrecked 'em? Damn near killed 'em!

Steve Kerr
made a pretty good point about how the future of the NBA will be less about the post and more about speed here:

If that's true, they made a very good choice to stick with the future all-star.  Another consequence I wonder about is what the Bulls do in the draft if speed is more important--no Hibbert?

by Craig Hodges Explosion 3000 on May 1, 2007 11:42 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think if he's there....
well we should know after this series if we need and big 7'2 guy to clog things up. But I would take Best player on the board which you could always use for trade bait next season. Maybe just get more athletic. Like Corey Brewer? I'd really love to see Al Horford as a bull. Deng, Tyrus and Horford as our future would look nice.

We Can Take Detroit
Gordon's playing like he's been in this league for 5 or 6 years already. Deng's showing us why we don't really need Pau Gasol. Kirk's justifying his place in the All-Defensive team. Noc's playing the same ball he did last year. Add that to Wallace, Idon't think Detroit can take their foot off the pedal this series. I really like our chances this year. We just need to play the same game we did all post-season so far and we might even go finals. And next year, we'll be even better.

Damn, it's good to be a Bull.

by blackmage71 on May 1, 2007 10:57 AM CDT   0 recs

I agree. Call me crazy, but I think
the Bulls are a better team than the Pistons.

I think we'll win unless the team is complacent and feels that it has already accomplished its goals for the season.

If the Bulls are as hungry and as focused as they were in in round one, Chicago in six.

by 1958ChiTown on May 1, 2007 1:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Of course they haven't accomplished
what they set out to do this season.  Every team goes into the season with aspirations of playoff and championship success (even the Bobcats!).

The Bulls are better than Detroit in some ways, Detroit is better in other ways..  both teams are the best in the conference, and I think most of you give CHI the nod simply because of the regular season when I believe it was the first "series" win for CHI since '99 (I may be mistaken, fix it NittanyBull without shoving your foot in your mouth!).  Detroit has had the playoff success recently, and have shown they can make adjustments (well at least since LB was coach) during a 7 game series (see CLE game 7 last year).

Put Detroit in a pressure situation, they come out on top 9 out of 10.  Chicago will get there soon, perhaps this series (I hope not)
